Misc Cebu Pix - Sept 15 to 18, 2006
Visited Gymboree and met Mia's co-teachers. Ate in Guisippe, a decent Italian resto (although I like Pasto more and it's cheaper too... but for Cebu, I'd go for Olio). It's rated highly though. I think we just ordered the wrong pizza.
The best was the new Japanese resto, Kagura. Very reasonable prices and great food! The ambiance was really nice as well. Plus there's a SPA behind where you can have a massage, sauna, body scrub, and some Japanese thing for P350! Too bad we we're able to go. =(
Ate at Cafe Laguna also with Mia's family and grandparents. Good pinoy food. Crispy tadyang was superb as well as the fresh lumpia. I'm glad to be home in the Philippines! =)

1 week left...
Just one more week...
I'm still not done with my dissertation. I still need to go over it a few more times and proof read it. But I'm almost there. Printing and binding, hopefully, by Monday.
I can believe I only have a week left. It has actually been almost a year since I left Manila. Time does fly.
Although I'm really really excited to go home, I can't help but feel nostalgic and a bit sad as well. I've met so many great people here, new friends. From my flatmates, classmates, fellow pinoy students, and the Filipinos who have been so accomodating and supportive; it really made my stay so much easier and memorable.
To quote my acknowledgements page:
I would like to express my appreciation to all my professors and tutors who shared their knowledge and experiences with us. To my classmates, thanks for the newfound friendships that span across cultures and nationalities. I hope I can visit all of you in the future.
Special thanks goes out to all the Filipinos I have met in Manchester, especially Ate Mia, Kuya Rico, Ate Ann, Tabby, Joey, Tita Ophelia, and Tita Sue, for all their help in gathering respondents but most of all for making my stay feel a bit like home. To Margarette, Liza, Cathy, Sheila, and Aaron – my fellow Filipino students who have shared in this experience – thanks for the companionship, the friendship, and keeping each other sane.
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to my family and Mia for their unwavering support and love even miles away. I could not have done this without you. Lastly, to God, who has always been there and always will. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.
One more week... I'm coming home.

Trip to Bath and Stonehenge - Aug 25
Left Reading at 613am and got to Bath when it was just waking up at 7am. Took a stroll along its cobbled streets which were still empty of cars and people. Lovely city. Very small with only 80 thousand people.
It's a National Heritage city and protected which is a good thing. I hope we'll be able to do the same with some areas at least in the Philippines.
Stonehenge was great. Can't imagine how and why it was created. The mysticism behind it is mind-boggling! And you can feel the energy! Amazing!
Trip to Reading - Aug 24
Took a trip to Reading last August 24 to watch the UPCC perform and to meet up with a friend, Camila (barkada of Mia), who's part of the group.
Little did I know that it was also the start of the Reading Music Festival so waves and waves of students were there. Almost all hotels were fully booked (esp the budget hotels). Argh! But I managed to find one right at the city center. The nice lady at the reception (thanks to her manager) allowed me to stay at the George Hotel for the weekend rate (which is 30% cheaper than the weekday rate). I bit over my budget, but I didn't want to sleep on the streets. =) Also, the hotel I stayed in was even part of the Heritage Tour! Apparently it's over 300 years old!
Reading is a nice town. I did the "Heritage Walking Tour" around the city. Nice parks and gardens. The new mall was also well designed.
Almost studied here instead of Manchester.

Calling all ADMU HS alumni! Big Boy needs our help!
From Raffy's email:
Hi Everyone!
Benjy Concepcion got to talk to Big Boy last week and the following is a summary of what happened to Big Boy:
- Last 05Jan06 Big Boy had a convulsion while at work.
- He went to Medical City for an MRI and a CT Scan.
- The CT Scan revealed that he has a small mass (1.3 by 1.8 by .8mm) in the left globe of his brain.
- The doctor, Dr Roderick Casis, advised him to get a cranial biopsy. He was also advised that there is a chance that he might be paralysed in the right arm. He got a second opinion from Dr Mariano of St Luke's and he was advised the same thing.
- He got a third opinion from Dr Edmund Mercado of Cardinal Santos who advised him of a new method that would use a syringe to extract a tissue sample from his brain and then the sample would be examined by a pathologist.
- Dr Mercado advised him to prepare an initial P350,000 for the procedure and treatment.
- They are targetting the procedure to be around 15Aug06.
- Lately, Big Boy has been feeling dizzy, uneasy and stressed out.
Big Boy's insurance will only cover P100,000 of the P350,000 so we need to pool our efforts to fund the balance - P250,000.
Donations are accepted at the office of the Principal (Fr RB Hizon SJ).
We're targeting 06Aug06 (also the birthday of Deutsche) as the deadline for the donations so that Big Boy can continue with the procedure on 15Aug06. It's nice to know that Deutsche's mom is very involved in this initiative and is helping Big Boy get the best treatment possible. We need all the help we can get to raise the the P250,000 so please ask your family and friends for support too.

Despedida Party for Manny
Had a despedida party hosted by Manny (PhD in Sociology and is actually a professor in ADMU!). Great food!!! Had dinuguan, kaldaretang kambing sa gata, chopsuey, pansit canton, sweet and spicy ribs, and some pata dish with anise (estofado?). Watched the England vs. Ecuador and Portugal vs. the Netherlands.
